Building 2030

Dear Colleagues:

As you know, over the course of this year, we have been putting the pieces in place to create the FP2030 Global Support Network, an expanded partnership structure based in five regional hubs.

I am so happy that today, on World Contraception Day, we can share news of the continued growth and transformation of our global family planning partnership.

FP2030 is pleased to announce that our Asia and the Pacific Regional Hub will be located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, hosted by the International Planned Parenthood Federation East and South East Asia & Oceania Region (IPPF ESEAOR). This is the fourth FP2030 regional hub; others are the North America and Europe Hub in Washington, D.C.; the East and Southern Africa Hub in Nairobi, Kenya; and the North, West, and Central Africa Hub in Abuja, Nigeria.

IPPF has been a family planning leader in Asia for 70 years, through its member associations and its strong partnerships. IPPF was one of the first FP2020 and then FP2030 commitment makers, and I cannot think of a better partner to establish the FP2030 Support Network in the Asia & Pacific region.

I sat down with IPPF Board Chair Kate Gilmore and IPPF ESEAOR Regional Director Tomoko Fukuda to discuss the opportunity that lies ahead of us in this new phase of our partnership.

And of course, this announcement follows our news last week that we’ve appointed the first FP2030 staff in Africa, under the leadership of Managing Director (East and Southern Africa Hub) Dr. Sheila Macharia. We are also in the final stages of hiring for the North, West and Central Africa Hub. And lastly, I'm delighted to share we've now hired Monica Kerrigan as Interim Managing Director at the North America & European Hub. We’re delighted to see these hubs come onboard and begin building their staffs and regional networks.

With warm regards,

Dr. Samukeliso Dube
Executive Director

Family Planning High Impact Practices (HIPs) are a set of evidence-based practices vetted by global experts and are intended to help programs ensure their resources have maximum impact. In the face of disruptions to health services, supply chains, and family planning programming, implementers have adapted HIPs to overcome challenges, suit local contexts and norms, and improve their programs. The recently published Adapting High Impact Practices in Family Planning During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Experiences From Kenya, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe in Global Health: Science and Practice, documents small adjustments to existing activities and approaches in direct response to challenges posed by COVID-19. Adaptions were made to three specific HIPs: Mobile Outreach Services, Community Health Workers, and Digital Health for Social and Behavior Change.

In case you missed the HIPs webinar on Meaningful Adolescent and Youth Engagement, please see the link to the slides and recording here. Speakers from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), International Youth Alliance for Family Planning (IYAFP), and MSI Reproductive Choices gave an overview of Meaningful Adolescent and Youth Engagement and Partnership in Sexual and Reproductive Health Programming. The HIP Strategic Planning Guide of the same name was just published this year.

Knowledge SUCCESS, FP2030, Population Action International, and Management Sciences for Health have partnered on a three-part collaborative dialogue series on universal health coverage (UHC) and family planning. The latest conversation focused on financing schemes and innovations for UHC and the integration of family planning, and there's still time to register for the upcoming conversation on Oct. 18: Getting it Right to Ensure We #LeaveNoOneBehind.

Learn about legal and policy barriers to self-managed abortion globally.

Season 4 of the Inside the FP Story podcast explores family planning programming in fragile settings and just launched last week!

Breaking the silence on infertility: Infertility affects more than 180 million individuals worldwide, equally affecting men and women, but women and girls often bear the societal burden of infertility and its consequences, including gender-based violence. Addressing infertility means addressing human rights and gender inequality, contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Don't miss this policy brief from Marie E. Thoma, Muntaha Gharaibeh, Elly Leemhuis, Arnob Chakrabarty, Kishore Kumer Basak, & Ananya Krishnan.
